Hydro Excavation FAQs

Hydro excavation, also called hydrovac excavation, uses pressurized water to loosen soil. A vacuum then removes the resulting slurry and transfers it into a debris tank, allowing soil to be removed in a controlled area.

Hydro excavation is commonly used to expose underground utilities, create small test holes, and remove soil around buried infrastructure. It may also support trenching, utility installation, inspection, maintenance, and repair projects.

Traditional excavation removes soil with mechanical equipment such as buckets, blades, or augers. Hydro excavation uses water and vacuum equipment, providing more control over the excavation area and reducing direct mechanical contact with buried infrastructure.

Yes. Underground utilities should be identified before excavation begins. Hydro excavation can carefully expose and verify utilities, but it does not replace required utility-location and safe-digging procedures. OSHA requires underground installations to be located before excavation and their exact locations determined by safe and acceptable means as work approaches them.

Pricing depends on the location, scope of work, site accessibility, excavation requirements, and time needed. Contact White River with the project details for a clear quote before service is scheduled.
